A picture tells more that 1000 words, so this is only a simple visualization, with a lot details missing.
The main idea is, that the gearing that drives the generator shall be so heavy, that the steps of the ladder only moves when you rest the whole of your weight on it. And the
ideal is that the steps only sinks so slow, that you can rest a little while it sinks.
If the ladder are much higher than the person climbing it, it would be possible to climb to the top and rest for a while, while it sinks. - Equipped with a seat, the rest can
even be so comfortable that the person can do it for hours.
A broad ladder would eventually make it possible for more persons to climb it - if the gearing could be adjusted, so that the increased weight could be used efficiently.
